Hello San Diego! We hope everyone's summer got off to a good start. The San Diego County Fair continues until next Tuesday (the 4th). As we have noted, it is predominantly a celebration of Americana, but international-style food and performances are always part of the mix. Current theater offerings include The Taming of the Shrew at the Old Globe and the Musical Lempicka is being performed at UCSD. Saturday and Sunday, the classic film Roman Holiday will be screened at Cinema Under the Stars. Saturday, Xiuhpoualli: 52 Years of Sueños will close out the Centro’s year-long
50th celebration with a Facebook live stream in-person panel discussion. The Little Italy Summer Film Series launches with Ammore e Malavita (Love and Bullets), a "romantic comedy mafia musical" set in the lovely city of Naples. The films in the series will all be screened outdoors in Amici Park and continue every Saturday until the beginning of September. At the Quartyard, Noche de Cumbia will feature Tropa Magica, Los Sleepwalkers, Cumbia Machin' & DJ Viejo Lowbo. Sunday, in celebration of Independence Day, the House of USA will present its annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages in Balboa Park. Next Wednesday, Warwick's will host an online discussion with author Tessa Arlen as she discusses her new book, A Dress of Violet Taffeta. At the Coronado Library, the classic Japanese romantic fantasy Ugetsu will be shown. Next Thursday, there will be a Tanabata Celebration at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park. Next Friday, the Center for World Music and the Mingei Museum will present the San Diego Korean Pungmul Ensemble in concert. Unfortunately, the concert is now sold out. American bilingual Latin-folk singer, Gina Chavez will perform at the Westin. Next Saturday, Alika will perform at the Worldbeat Center. The outdoor Little Italy Summer Film Series will continue with a screening of the comedy Smetto Quando Voglio: Masterclass (I Can Quit Whenever I Want: Masterclass). Next Sunday, the House of France will be celebrating Bastille Day at their annual Lawn Program at the Balboa Park International Cottages. At Liberty Station, there will be an all-day Eid Festival. At St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Del Mar, members of the San Diego Symphony and FF Collective are partnering with a Ukrainian refugee flutist to perform a Benefit Concert to fund relief efforts for 60 members of Ukraine’s premier youth orchestra who are displaced in Poland because of the war in their home region. Opera Neo’s season-opening Aria Gala will introduce the 2022 young artists, each singing a signature aria. Everyone here at the San Diego Participant Observer and the Worldview Project wish you fulfilling, illuminating, and culturally-rich experiences in the days ahead. See you next week!

The Participant Observer Music CD of the Month is Music of the Honey Gatherers by Paban Das Baul.
Steeped in the ancient tradition of the Bauls, the wandering spiritual musicians of Bengal, Music Of The Honey Gatherers is a beautiful and varied collection of stripped back and powerful trance-inducing Baul songs, imbued with the itinerant flavour of life on the road.

Our Book of the Month recommendation is Man Tiger by Hiromi Kawakami.
A wry, affecting tale set in a small town on the Indonesian coast, Man Tiger tells the story of two interlinked and tormented families and of Margio, a young man ordinary in all particulars except that he conceals within himself a supernatural female white tiger..
